Here’s how to watch ‘Conclave’ for free following Pope Francis’ death (2025)

With the news that Pope Francis died at age 88 on Easter Monday following double pneumonia and a stroke, Catholics worldwide are mourning while also looking ahead to the future of the Catholic Church and the men who may emerge as papal candidates.

If you’re thinking, if only there were a movie out there that explains exactly what is about to happen at the Vatican as the church prepares to elect a new pope, then you’re in luck.

You’ll want to watch “Conclave,” the 2024 Oscar-winner starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, as the real-life process of the papal conclave begins in the next 15-20 days.

“Conclave,” based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, is a fictional take on the secretive process of electing a new pontiff, inspired by the 2005 papal conclave, in which a cardinal’s diary about the process was leaked to the press. Fiennes plays the dean of the College of Cardinals, in charge of organizing the conclave that will elect a new pope.

In scenes that will likely mirror ones to come, the cardinals in “Conclave” must decide what kind of pope they want to elect, as emerging cardinals represent different ideologies within the Catholic Church. Will a conservative cardinal be elected to follow a pope who was quite liberal in his beliefs? Could the Church see another pontifex whose election makes history? Only time will tell.

So, while you wait for news of the actual conclave to trickle in, why not stream “Conclave”?
