You’ll never have to dry shave again.
June 15, 2022
We’ve all been there — you’re mid-shave only to realize you’ve run out of shaving cream before getting to your second leg. Sure, you could skip that second leg altogether, but if you were shaving in the first place, we doubt that’s the look you were hoping for.
Rather than resorting to an uneven shave — or worse, dry shaving — there are a few alternatives that you can use instead of shaving cream. While these aren’t permanent replacements, we’d be willing to bet you have these items somewhere in your house.
So even if you have to step out of the shower for a second, they can make for a handy impromptu stand-in. Below, find seven shaving cream alternatives for when you’re all out and skipping that shave just isn’t an option.
1. Conditioner
One of the most popular substitutes for shaving cream is conditioner — and for a good reason. Conditioner typically has a thick formula and is formulated with soothing, hydrating ingredients, making it an easy swap for shaving cream if you’re in need. The Cleveland Clinic also says that hair conditioner can be used to help your razor glide along your skin more easily.
2. Body Lotion
It’s very important to moisturize your skin right after hopping out of the shower, but in this case, body lotion can make for a great temporary shaving cream replacement. Its thick, creamy formula will help you get the perfect shave without hurting your skin, and it will leave your legs feeling soft and smooth. You can also opt for an in-shower body lotion, which will leave you with moisturized skin before you even finish showering.
3. Body Oil
Body oil is another great substitute for shaving cream. It’s lightweight and has multiple benefits that can nourish your skin and keep it moisturized. Look for body oils made with ingredients such as fruit and flower extracts, which will help enhance your skin’s shine after shaving. This alternative is also recommended by Cleveland Clinic, as it can help your razor slide smoothly over your skin.
4. Shea Butter
You’re likely familiar with shea butter, an ingredient known for its hydrating abilities. It’s harvested from nuts and works to protect and relieve dry skin. You may even recognize it from the labels of some of your favorite skin care, hair care, and makeup products. On its own, however, shea butter can be used as an impromptu shaving cream. Check out your local beauty supply store or organic grocery store to stock up on raw shea butter for your bathroom shelf.
5. Coconut Oil
You may have heard about the benefits of coconut oil for skin, but we have a feeling you haven’t considered using it this way. As it turns out, much like shea butter, coconut oil can be used when your shaving cream can is empty. It’s super moisturizing and will help protect your skin. Remember to rinse your razor frequently to prevent build-up. If you’re using a disposable razor, go ahead and throw it away after a single shave.
6. Aloe Vera
When summer is in full swing, it’s likely you’ll have some aloe vera lying around. Instead of only using it to soothe your sunburn, use the aloe vera by smoothing it onto your skin before shaving. The thick, jelly-like texture will give your skin a slick surface that will let the blade of your razor move across it seamlessly.
7. Body Wash
Rounding out the list, we’re coming back to shower staples — we’re sure you saw this alternative coming. Just like you can use a conditioner as a quick fix when you’ve run out of shaving cream, shower gel or body wash can also work as a handy replacement. Similar to the other options, it creates a slick, smooth base so that you can shave easily.
